Tripcode Generating Guide for 4chan using MTY and Tripcode Explorer

Tripcodes let you verify your identity on anonymous forums such as 4chan. Due to the way tripcodes are generated it's possible to embed your own text in a tripcode with a tripcode generator. The downside to this is that other people may also generate tripcodes to find tripcode keys that are similar. (While it is possible to find the exact same tripcode, it is currently not practical for the average person to do so.) To stop the cracking of tripcodes secure trips were created, but they do not allow personalization like traditional tripcodes.

There is a tradeoff between the inherent insecurity of normal tripcodes and the unrecognizability of secure tripcodes. Few people will bother to memorize a secure tripcode (ie !!Oo43raDvH61), but most will be able to remember a normal, generated tripcode (ie !Hello72IJC). Most users will find normal, non-secure tripcodes offer the best balance of verified identity and recognizability.

Entering a tripcode ...and the result

If you don't plan on using a generated tripcode, it's recommended you use a secure tripcode. A normal tripcode, without any words or phrases, is as unintelligible as a secure tripcode while offering less security.

Generating your own Tripcode

There are two main tripcode generating programs: Tripcode Explorer and MTY, both of which come from Japan's 2chan forum which uses the same tripcode system as 4chan. Tripcode Explorer is relatively easy to use, has been largely translated into English, and offers reasonable speed. MTY can be significantly faster than Tripcode Explorer (a 10x speedup is not unusual), but is harder to use and requires an ATI video card to achieve its faster speed (3000, 4000, and 5000 series cards work, such as the 4850 and 5850). A program to take advantage of Nvidia cards was in development, Tripcode Explorer for CUDA, but it seems work was halted.

Tripcode Explorer is pretty self-explanatory, but here's a basic walk-through. If you just want to find a word or phrase without any constraints, just enter it in the "Strings to find" box, like in the above screenshot. Then just press the green arrow and wait until it finds you a tripcode key. You'll probably want to keep your word or phrase less than seven charactors, otherwise it may take an unreasonable amount of time to find the tripcode.

If you want to customize the tripcode more, you can use regular expressions. For example, a caret "^" symbol will left align your word or phrase. Putting brackets "[ ]" acts as a logical OR. For instance, [Oo][Pp] will find any tripcodes containing "OP", "Op", "oP", or "op". The screenshot below shows ^[H][Ee][Ll][Ll][Oo] which a left justified H followed by the continued spelling of "hello" in upper or lowercase, ie "HeLLo" or "HElLo". By allowing upper and lowercase characters you will decrease the time it takes to find the tripcode you desire.

When you've found a tripcode you like, simply right click and select "Copy trip key" and then paste it into the name field at 4chan (ie Name#y1±@yWS2).

Selecting your tripcode key

If you go into Tools --> Options and deselect "Restrict search to ASCII characters" you can speed up the search dramatically, but you'll need to change the encoding for the tripcode key to work. Open up Notepad++ and paste the tripcode key into a new document. Then go to Encoding->Character Sets->Japanese and select Shift-JIS. Highlight the tripcode key and then copy and paste into 4chan.

MTY tripcode generator

MTY is the tripcode generator for x32 and x64 processor systems with AMD/ATI GPUs of 3000 series and above. If you fit that description, then read on and follow the instructions here.

  1. Make sure your graphics drivers are up to date. This file was written on 26th June 2010, when the latest was Catalyst 10.6.
  2. The included DLLs should work, but if you have problems do the following:
    1. For 32-bit systems: find amdcalcl.dll, amdcaldd.dll, and amdcalrt.dll in your C:\Windows\System32 directory. Copy them to the folder with mty_cal_w32.exe, and rename them so that amd is replaced with ati. So, amdcalcl.dll would become aticalcl.dll, etc.
    2. For 64-bit systems: follow the same instructions as above, but the files will have 64 after their names - amdcalcl64.dll for example. Same location as before.
  3. Make sure that the 4 files are named properly and are in the same directory, and then modify the target.txt file located with this text file. Place any words you'd like to find on separate lines. Regular expressions are supported.
  4. Make sure all 5 files are in the same directory now, and then run either mty_cal_w32.exe or mty_cal_x64.exe depending on your version of windows is 32 or 64-bit. This has only been tested on Windows 7 with a Radeon 5870 and a 4850, and the creator of MTY is japanese and NOT ME. The official location for these binaries is at Sourceforge.
  5. When you've found your trips, open log.txt with Notepad++ and then go to Encoding->Character Sets->Japanese->Shift-JIS. Then copy and paste into 4chan.
